Indeed, it would rather be the stereotypical symphonic acts that are dramatic for the sake of being metal and gothic. Graveworm for instance would rather be a cheap sounding melodic black metal to me, that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy this band from time to time.
Anyway, Emperor definitely doesn't sound overly dramatic, same can be said about Obtained Enslavement.

I suppose i could have elaborated more. Emperor and Negura Bunget are really the only Symphonic Black Metal bands that i don't have any complaints about (both of which are within my top 25 bands of all time). Any other SBM band I've heard of I could never get into... Graveworm does nothing for me, I have never listened to any of their songs in their entirety and drew any conclusion beyond "meh". Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth best fit the description of what i said in my earlier post. Finally, the only other SBM band I can think of right now, Anorexia Nervosa, I, for whatever reason, can't get into. So, I just generally assume they're not very good.

I don't think Negura Bunget should be classified as "symphonic" black metal and Anorexia is surely overdoing their stuff, enphasizing the romantic/gothic/post-punk imagery and aspects way too much therefore it belongs to extreme gothic music just like Cradle of Filth and Graveworm and all that bastardisation in the end.
