Pedals

Postby Etiam on Sun Oct 25, 2009 12:32 am

Thinking about making my own pedal. Starting simple with a clean boost, since I have no need for a distortion pedal.

Finding a couple tremendous resources:

http://proguitarshop.com/

Which has extensive videos on all kinds of pedals and other gear

http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/

Which sells a lot of kits has a pretty good forum, from what I've seen.

Others--Aum, mostly, I guess--have much experience with pedals? Favorite types, brands, etc.?

Never messed around with trying to make my own. Electronics stuff befuddles me (the difference between amps, ohms, volts, etc), and open current gives me anxiety.

BUT: My favorite type of distortion pedal is definitely a fuzz. I found a small company called Earthbound Audio that makes great handbuilt stuff. But you have no need for distortion, ah? Honestly, I don't keep up enough with a lot of other types of pedals, but I do feel like Boss really does actually make good, dependable stuff when it comes to things like delay and modulation. Of course, if you can find old analog Electro-Harmonix tape echos and delays, I'd go with those, the sound quality is just that much better.

Aye, I'm finding EH to have produced some really nice analog effects stuff beyond the distortion/overdrive type. Fuzz really isn't my thing, so that cuts out a lot of those bizarrely named boutique types.

I'm less excited than I was about building an overdrive pedal, since it just makes more sense now to buy a really good overdrive and then build something a little less integral to my tone, like a volume pedal to start.

I've found The Comparinator, which I feel like I've already posted somewhere, which is another great resource for OD pedals. Most pedal shooutouts are poorly recorded and have ever-changing setups, but this guy studio-recorded a couple dozen pedals playing the exact same riffs in the exact same situation, and allows you to listen to them all side by side at different settings.

I'm presently leaning towards a Maxon--OD9 Pro + or a couple others--or an Emma. Maybe a Xotic, but haven't heard enough of them.

Look into the Tube Screamer. The ones made in the 70's. There are also people who mod newer ones to sound more like the originals. And I'm certain there are folks out there who are essentially just rehousing them and selling them with a different name.
