Yeah. And I'm trying to think of something to say to save face, but, I got nothing. There's no way I can come out still looking cool. What's this I hear about Leo Dicaprio directing or starring in a live action remake of Akira?

to my knowledge it's mostly rumors and and little substantial fact. DiCaprio allegedly has an interest in making a live-action remake of Akira but there's not much more than that i know of. i heard a few months back it was dead, only to hear about a month later that DiCaprio was still trying, so who knows. it's like the Arrested Development movie in that I keep hearing things that are supposedly facts but sound like recycled sound bites and come from third-rate entertainment biz websites. of course the difference here is that Mitch Hurwitz is purportedly writing a script right now.

Mulholland Drive. Messier than I remember, but at the level of the scene boy does it deliver. Wonderfully uncanny.
Funny Games (the newer one) - got the point, so didn't feel the need to watch to the end. Such an arrogantly didactic approach to filmmaking.
The Reader - good, 4/5
The New World - fucking amazing: I love you Terrence Malick.

A Serious Man

UNNbelievably good movie. It's the latest Coen brother film (Oct, 2009), and it is phenomenal. I don't have much time to elaborate on it, but it's one of those movies where I could write a 20 page thesis on it. It manages to be one of the most depressing but most positive movies I've ever seen. GO SEE IT

Went and saw The 4th Kind tonight. Something was wrong with the projector and the movie was blurry almost the whole time. Just enough to be annoying. It made it hard to pay attention, but eventually I was able to ignore it. I enjoyed it, it was the kind of scary that I like. I thought the story was interesting, and I don't quite understand all the bad reviews.

G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra
Transformers 2: Rise of the Fallen

I was looking for completely braindead action with no purpose beyond big guns, big boobs, and bigger explosions...which they at least delivered.

(And I can't take Christopher Eccelston seriously as a villain after Dr. Who, plus his scottish is rubbish.)

White Oleander:: Got gyped into watching this under the premise that it was a chick flick that even dudes can enjoy. Okay, fine. I gave it a shot and that's what it tries to be, but it's too riddled with cliches to even begin to accomplish it. Aweful movie.

The Royal Tennenbaums:: Decided to give this movie another shot since my admiration for Rushmore is becoming more fervent with each successive veiwing. I didn't like this movie when I first saw it (should note that I was in junior high at the time and pretty closeminded as far as movies go.), and I can still understand why today, but I also think I caught a lot more of the humor this time around which helped make up for the little annoyances. Overall I'd say it's a good movie, but Rushmore is far better.

The Descent:: Meh. Great premise. Cardboard characterization and over-reliance on jump-out-and-grab-you scares kind of ruins it though. Those monsters should have looked MUCH cooler than they did. SPOILERAlso if you have two endings to your film, choose ONE. Do not try to cram both in their with the stupid happy-ending-fake-out tactic.ENDSPOILER.

Paranormal Activity:: Effective, but it's really just a really jumpy horror film. Good ending.

Trick 'R Treat:: Now this is a good horror movie. Excellently written plotlines winding around each other, good acting, and great production values.

Wow, I pretty much agree with this entirely. I would have also noted that 80% of the movie is nearly pitch black which goes along with your over reliance on jump-scares.

Saw Ronin this week. It's known for its chase scenes, and for good reason, but this is no one trick pony. the characters' level of professionalism and constant twists and turns make this one of the best espionage movies i've ever seen, period.

Also saw Andy Warhol's Dracula, also known as Blood For Dracula. Pure trash, though Warhol fans will call it camp. One of the worst movies i've watched since Wild Hogs

Kramer vs Kramer - depressing, a bit ant-climatic, but still very engaging.

Hudson Hawk - Campy, silly humour, but good nonetheless.

Army of Darkness - always fun, lots of memorable lines

Agreed on The Descent. So much potential from the novel ruined by girl power and Gollum bloodfests.

Ronin was on television today. Have never seen it, so I didn't recognize the brief clip. When I saw Sean Bean, De Niro, Jean Reno in quick succession, though, I was A) Overwhelmed by their collective nasal potency B) Impressed by what looked like a class film. Must pursue.

I liked the all female cast in The Descent, helped it avoid some shitty fake love story plot they usually throw in those films...everyone was up for grabs.

I've had it for years but never watched it all, anyway it didn't received strong reviews. But sure, its nasal potency is undeniable.

In the immediate action, yes. But the entire outside motivation was about a love triangle, so I'm not sure this washes.

Yeah, the love triangle aspect seemed a bit like a throw away, as if to say, "here's your humanity in the face trial." But I also get what Drudge is saying, because that three-way aspect isn't really explored with much conviction and for much of the movie it does take on an everyone for themselves mentality that is truly unnerving. I also really enjoyed how female/mothercentric it is. The birthing symbolism is effectively spliced with the apprehension each girl faces, which in turn goads them into making rasher and more cinematically compelling decisions. While I'm less enthused about the movie than a lot were, I am quick to recommend it because I think it offers a number of discussion topics.

also, Des, were you talking about Ronin receiving negative reviews? I think it did initially but over the past decade has seen a number of revisionists take a second look at it. I think it's an easy movie to find paper thin at first, basically relying on the action, double-crosses and subsequent intrigue. But there's a great deal of character development to find between the cracks, making the film more compelling beyond just the speed and bullets. Each major player's intention is at some point called into question and in the end very few if any questions are answered. That gives rise to the question "then why should I care?", but you should. It's one of the most believable heist movies because of how little everyone knows, which is how I personally envision this level of international espionage. If anything, it's not the actions of these people that is compelling, but how these agents of unrest come together, how they manage to work towards a singular (as well as their own personal) goal and what are the broader implications. It really breaks down to how do single events shape international relations and domestic happenings, no matter how stylized, violent and/or outlandish Frankenheimer portrays them to be. If you've been sitting on it for a while I suggest you blow the dust off soon.
